Monthly Archives: October 2016

October Favorites!

Today I’m going to be sharing all of the things I’ve been loving during the month of October! I can’t believe we’re already into November; 2016 has just blown past! I’m getting super excited for Christmas, and I’ve already started to plan out what I’m going to buy everyone (am I the only one that plans for Christmas before Halloween is even over?!) Without further ado, let’s get into the short and sweet faves!

Too Faced Chocolate Bar Palette

I finally caved and bought this palette at the very end of September, and I absolutely love it! I went back and forth for so long between the original Chocolate Bar palette and the Semi-Sweet palette, and I’m so happy I chose the original. This palette is truly one of the best on the market, and I’ve been obsessed with pretty much every single shade in here. This has helped me branch out so much and really helped me get out of my comfort zone.

Pumpkin scented candles

“Sweet Cinnamon Pumpkin” is from Bath & Body Works, Chesapeake Bay Candle “Pumpkin Spice” is from Target

Fall means pumpkin scented candles. I love getting home from work and lighting a candle for the evening, it’s so calming and relaxing to have a candle going and the scent of pumpkin in the air.

Golden Pear & Brown Sugar Body Lotion

This lotion smells exactly like cookies! I’ve been using this like crazy, and I think it’s a perfect transition scent going from fall into the holidays.

Simple Moisturizing Face Wash

I’ve been using this facewash for a few weeks, and I absolutely adore it. I love that Simple has such natural and sensitive skin friendly ingredients. I feel comfortable putting this on my skin because I know that it’s gentle and good for my face.

Sally Hansen Gel Envy Top Coat

I’ve been loving this gel top coat on top of normal nail polish. This really makes my polish last such a freaking long time! (I’m planning on doing a blog post all about this stuff and showing how my nail polish wears with it, etc.)

I know this was a super short list of favorites this month, but I hope you enjoyed hearing about everything I’ve been loving! Let me know in a comment what your favorite products for October have been, and I hope you’ve been having a wonderful fall! Until next time!!

Maybelline Concealer Guide: Which Drugstore Concealer is Best?

Today I’m going to be comparing a few different concealers from Maybelline. Maybelline makes my favorite drugstore concealers, and I thought it would be fun to put them all side by side. We’re going to be talking about the Age Rewind Dark Circle Eraser, Dream Lumi Touch, Master Conceal, and Fit Me! Let’s get into it!

The first concealer I want to talk about is the Maybelline Age Rewind Dark Circle Eraser Concealer. This retails for $7.19 and comes with 0.2 oz. of product. It comes in 6 different shades.*  This concealer is described as having a “Super concentrated formula with goji berry + haloxyl that helps to erase the appearance of dark circles and fine lines, while visibly diminishing the appearance of puffiness around the eyes.”**

I’ve used up 2 or 3 of these concealers over the years, and I’ve got to say that I’ve honestly never noticed any kind of “treatment” happening under my eyes. This concealer is light to medium coverage, and the sponge applicator is great for a quick sweep under the eyes, but it hasn’t ever “deminished puffiness or fine lines” for me. If you are looking for a quick and easy lightweight (and light coverage) concealer, this one is for you.

Next up is the Maybelline Dream Lumi Touch Concealer. This retails for $5.89 for 0.05 oz. and it comes in 6 different shades.*  “Maybelline’s Dream Lumi Touch Highlighting Concealer’s gel-based formula diffuses light like no other, so it illuminates as it covers imperfections, for instantly brighter looking skin.”**

This is another concealer that I’ve used up 2 or 3 tubes of over the years. Although you get the least amount of product with this concealer (and you blow through the tube of this pretty fast), I find that this really does diffuse light and brighten under my eyes. This definitely has the most coverage combined with the most brightening. I also love the convenience of the brush tip for a quick sweep under the eyes that you can blend out with your finger. If you have really dark undereyes that you want to brighten, this is the concealer for you.

Next is the Maybelline Master Concealer. This retails for $7.99 and comes with 0.4 oz. and it comes in 5 different shades. This concealer also has SPF 12.*  “This formula camouflages imperfections and dark circles with ultra-resistant full coverage. Maximum conceal.”**

This concealer definitely has the highest coverage out of any of the ones I’ve talked about today. I find that this needs some serious setting powder or it does tend to crease under my eyes throughout the day. I really didn’t like this formula on imperfections, but it definitely covered dark circles. Also keep in mind that while this concealer is very camouflaging, it doesn’t brighten your undereyes the way that the Lumi concealer will. If you have the darkest of undereyes and are more interested in coverage than brightening, this is the concealer for you.

Finally we have the Maybelline Fit Me Concealer. This retails for $4.99 and comes with 0.23 oz. It is available in 6 different shades.*  This concealer claims that it “Blends seamlessly to cover under-eye circles & imperfections. Matches natural tone, never blotches, never cakes.”**

There’s a reason that this concealer is a best seller. The Fit Me is such an all around reliable and solid concealer, and I would definitely say that this is my favorite. It truly does blend seamlessly into the skin, and it has awesome coverage for both undereyes and imperfections on the face. It’s also true that this never blotches or cakes up, and it really does melt into the skin and looks so beautiful and natural. If you’re looking for an all-around all over the face concealer that’ll never let you down, this is the one for you.

I hope you enjoyed hearing my side-by-side review and comparison of the Maybelline concealers! Have you tried any of these? Which one is your favorite? Thank you so much for stopping by!!

Revlon Colorstay Foundation Review (Combination/Oily Formula)

I’m going to be doing a quick review on the Revlon Colorstay foundation in the combination/oily formula. I want to start by saying that I have super oily and super pale skin. I have a really hard time with 99.9% of drugstore foundations being too dark and too greasy on my face.

I just finished my second bottle of this foundation. One of the bottles I used was the old formula with the glass bottle and the twist-off lid that had no SPF, and the other bottle was the new formula with the pump and SPF 15.

I’m one of the people that firmly believe adding the SPF into the foundation changed the formula a lot. Colorstay has been around for years and years, so adding the pump and SPF was a huge deal. When I first tried the new formula, I really didn’t like it. While the old packaging was annoying because you had to dump the foundation out onto the back of your hand when you used it, I thought it was much fuller coverage and had much better lasting power. The old Colorstay was like a foundation mask, and the only foundation with higher coverage was the Estée Lauder Double Wear.

When I finally gave up on the Beauty Blender and starting using a foundation brush with the new Colorstay formula, I really fell back in love with it. While the SPF did thin out both the consistency and the coverage, I think the added SPF makes this foundation even better for everyday wear.

Revlon Colorstay has one of the best shade ranges from the drugstore. Their lightest shade matches my skin perfectly and I’ve never had a problem with it oxidizing on me. This is such a huge benefit to this foundation, because I normally have a really hard time with even the lightest foundation shades being several shades too dark for my skin.

I find that I don’t have to set this foundation with the heaviest duty mattifying powder, either. It holds up pretty well with a light dusting of any translucent powder (which is a miracle for my crazy oily skin, I usually have to powder halfway through the day and I never need to touch up with Colorstay). The coverage is amazing and it builds up really well on top of itself when I want to layer in certain areas.

Final verdict: I love the Revlon Colorstay foundation. It’s one of the best (if not the absolute best) for oily skin from the drugstore. If you haven’t picked up a bottle of it yet, you need to!

Products I Used Up – Massive October Empties!

It’s time for another monthly empties!!! I don’t quite know how I managed to use up so many things during the month of October, but I have a huge empties post today. These monthly empties posts keep me so motivated to use up products throughout the month, and I’m honestly shocked at how many things I’ve used since starting this series on my blog.

Enough chitchat, let’s get into my trash for the month. 😉

Makeup

My first empty this month is my Chapstick Total Hydration Vanilla lip balm. I noticed that this had a weird exfoliating texture, almost like sugar granules. I don’t know if it’s formulated that way, or if I just got a dud. Would I repurchase? I hated the exfoliating rough texture, so no I’m not going to buy this again.

Next is my Clinique Advanced Concealer in the shade “01 Matte Light”. This is seriously the most pigmented concealer ever (even more so than the Kay Von D concealer!). This stuff could cover the biggest, reddest, nastiest zit in the world with no problem. Will I repurchase this? Although I loved this stuff back in high school, I don’t think I’ll buy it again just because of the oxidization that it has. But if you need serious coverage, this is your guy.

If you follow me on Instagram (which if you don’t, what the heck are you doing?! It’s at DisneyWifeBlog, go follow right now!) you’ll have seen that I finished my Revlon Colorstay foundation a couple weeks ago. Will I repurchase? I’m definitely planning on picking this stuff up again, it’s one of my faves!

I mentioned this L’oreal Miss Manga mascara in my September favorites post, and I already went out and got a new tube of it because I used it so much during September and October. I’m loving this mascara so much right now!

I finally decided to toss my L’oreal Voluminous Carbon Black mascara. I’ve had this tube for way longer than I should, and it’s finally starting to dry out on me. Will I repurchase? I’m definitely picking this up on my next makeup shopping trip, this is my holy grail drugstore mascara.

Skincare

I’m mentioning these two products together super quickly because I used these exact two skincare items up last month, and I featured them in September’s empties post. Birchbox sent me a leaked box during September, so I received a replacement box which means I’ve now used up two of these same samples. If you want to hear my thoughts and whether I’d purchase these, go read my September empties so that I’m not repeating myself here!

Next I have this Naked Advanced Aloe Cream, and I used this to moisturize my face (even though I think it’s meant for your body, oops!). Would I buy the full size? This actually smelled pretty rank, so I definitely wouldn’t buy it. Also, I’m getting really sick of moisturizer samples. I feel like they’re all I talk about! Lol 🙄

Lastly for skincare, I have a clay cleanser from Borghese. I actually really loved this stuff, and I stretched this little tube out for as long as I possibly could. Would I buy the full size? Yes I absolutely would! This cleanser smells amazing and left my skin feeling super clean and soft.

Haircare

My first haircare item is a foil packet I’ve been holding onto for an embarrassingly long amount of time. I finally used this Giovanni Ultra-Sleek Touch-Up hair towelette. While the keratin and argan oil left my hair soft and shiny (and smelled amazing), I actually had to spray some dry shampoo on top of this because it made my hair look greasy. Would I buy this? I think this would be a great night time hair mask, but I wouldn’t use this as a touch up product during the daytime.

Next up is my Aussie 3 Minute Miracle deep conditioner. This smells like coconuts and left my hair super soft, but I honestly don’t think it’s any better than their normal Moist conditioner. Would I repurchase this? I’ll probably just buy their normal conditioner next time.

Fragrance

I’m so proud to say that I actually finished up a couple of lotions! First up I have this Mary Kay lotion, and this scent reminds me so much of Christmas! Would I repurchase? I like the Bath & Body Works lotion formula a lot better, so no I probably wouldnt.

Speaking of B&BW, I loved this Marshmallow Pumpkin Latte lotion. I got this as a freebie, and I would totally buy the full size next year.

Misc.

We finished our massive bag of cotton balls this month. Would I repurchase? I’m actually preferring cotton rounds to cotton balls lately, so no I won’t buy these again for a while.

This was another one of those samples that I held onto forever and finally used this month! This is called Hiker’s Foot Healer, and it’s basically an extremely thick foot cream. Would I buy the full size? While I loved the peppermint lemon scent and this felt really good on my feet, I don’t really need such an intense moisturizer.

I used up this 100 point perk from Sephora; the Beauty Blender liquid cleanser. I hated this stuff! I didn’t feel like it cleaned my brushes or Beauty Blender any better than my normal brush cleaning routine, and I can’t believe this costs so much money for what it is! Would I buy this? Absolutely not!

Candles

I’m shocked that I finished 3 candles this month!!! The first one was a freebie from Bath & Body Works, and it was this cute mini Purrfect Pumpkin candle. This was your basic cinnamon pumpkin scent, and it lasted me about 4 hours of burning. Would I buy this? I already purchased a full size pumpkin scent from B&BW this year. (Can we take a second to acknowledge the fact that this teeny candle is $4.50 and you can spend like a buck more than that for a huge jar Candle from Walmart?!?! Crazy!!)

I didn’t quite get to finish this candle, but the wick tipped over before I could burn it all the way down. This is the Vanilla candle from Mainstays (Walmart’s brand) and I actually loved this candle! (I even featured it in last month’s favorites). Will I buy this again? I’m planning on picking up 2 or 3 of these the next time I go to Walmart!

Last but not least for this crazy long empties, I have this awesome woodwick candle in the scent “Vanilla Cedarwood”. This smelled exactly like Marshmallow Fireside (my all time fave) from B&BW, but it had the crackle sound of a woodwick. So basically it was the best candle ever. Will I buy this again? I’m planning on grabbing another one of these asap. (I found mine at Smith’s, so check your local Smith’s or Kroger for this brand if you’re interested. I got mine for $6 and it lasted weeks of non-stop burning!)

That’s all for my October empties! I hope you enjoyed! What was your favorite thing you used up during the month of October? Let me know in a comment. Thanks so much for stopping by my blog!!

Finish 5 by Winter Project Pan – Update #1

I’m here with my first update for my Project Pan! If you missed my intro post, you can click right here to see what Project Pan is and which products I chose to use up. I started this project around October 2nd, so I don’t quite have a full month’s worth of progress, but the project ends exactly 2 months from today, so I thought I’d update you guys on how I’m doing!

Starting out with the Makeup Forever lipstick, to be completely honest, I’ve only used this product about 3 times since I started this project. I definitely want to focus on this more throughout the month of November.

I’ve definitely been seeing quite a bit of progress with my Milk Makeup blush stick, and I’ve been using it every single day since I started this project. I’m pretty impressed with where I’m at because cream blushes are so hard to use up. I’m hoping that this will be gone by my next update.

This Maybelline Age Rewind concealer is probably the product with the most progress as of right now. I went ahead and marked it so you can see where I started and where I’m at as of update number one (I realize that the marking looks a little off, but it’s just plastic on top of the line, kinda hard to see in the picture though because of the awkward angle I took it at. My bad!) I’m really hoping to be almost finished with this by my next update.

I can see a lot more pan on my Anastasia DipBrow Pomade after about a month of using it. I’m getting a little bit worried that this might not be completely used up by the end of this project, but fingers crossed I can clean out the jar.

And last but not least, we have my Nivea Lip Butter. I’m actually doing a lot better with this than I thought I would. There’s still a ton of product to finish in 2 months, but I’ve made some awesome progress, and I’ve remembered to use this every day (sometimes multiple times a day) since I started this project!

I hope you enjoyed seeing my first update on my Finish 5 by Winter Project Pan! Wish me luck on continuing to use these products, and don’t forget to check back next month to see my progress!! Thanks for stopping by!

Why I Cancelled Birchbox

Today I’m going to be talking about why I decided to cancel my Birchbox subscription. I subscribed to Birchbox in January of 2016 and my final box was the September 2016 box, which is a total of 9 boxes that I received from them.

In the beginning, I was obsessed with everything that Birchbox sent to me. I actually loved them so much that I unsubscribed to Ipsy in April because I was getting all of the samples that I needed (I ended up subscribing back to ipsy in May because I had seen that the April bag was awesome and I felt super left out lol).

I just want it to be known that this isn’t a bashing post on Birchbox. I loved a lot of the boxes they sent to me, and I’m not trying to shine a bad light on them at all. I’m just sharing my personal experience on what led me to unsubscribe. That said, here we go…

THE REWARDS PROGRAM ISSUE

I started becoming unsatisfied with Birchbox around July of 2016 (that is to say, more unsatisfied than the typical ‘oh dang my box sucked this month’ that can happen from time to time with subscription services).

The company wasn’t doing very well at the time and they had been losing a lot of money. This led them to get rid of their rewards program. Instead of getting $5 a month to spend in their Birchbox store (by reviewing the products sent to you), you got one award of $5 per year for reviewing samples, and the only way you could earn Birchbox points is if someone signed up through your link (or you had a shitty box and they gave you credit to make up for it).

I understand why Birchbox had to do what they did, they were basically handing out free full-sized high end products to people just for reviewing items. I can see how long-term this would be bad for the company, and a change would need to be made. However, why can’t you just call a thing a thing Birchbox? Instead of saying that they were making budget cuts, they covered it up with “you can still earn points in our store by referring your friends!” (If you have some time to kill, go read through the comments on their Facebook post announcing the rewards change lol).

My frustration came from the fact that they scrapped rewards altogether. Instead of doing something like ipsy (you get points for reviewing which you can redeem on the samples that ipsy chooses for that particular month), they just decided to screw over their subscribers by taking away the whole thing. Don’t bite the hand that feeds you, Birchbox.

THE SAMPLE ISSUE

The rewards were the first irritation for me. What made me even more upset was when the samples started getting a budget cut as well. I felt like I was getting more and more shampoo, conditioner, moisturizer, and face wash samples. There was only 1 or 2 actual makeup products every month, which isn’t why I had subscribed to them. Ipsy was sending me makeup brushes, nail polishes, mascaras, blushes, and lipsticks meanwhile I was getting yet another facial cleanser from Birchbox.

THE SAMPLE SHRINKAGE ISSUE

Along with getting crappy products, the sizes of the samples were getting smaller and smaller. Not only that, but I started to notice that the tubes of face wash and moisturizer were only 1/3 of the way full, and I was only getting 1-2 uses out of them. I understand that they’re called samples for a reason, they’re not supposed to be enough to last you months on end. I also understand that you’re only paying $10 a month for what you’re getting. All I’m saying is that Ipsy is giving me 3oz bottles of deep conditioner for my $10 while Birchbox is sending me .33oz of face wash over and over again.

CRAPPY PACKAGING ISSUES

When I first subscribed to Birchbox, they used to wrap the products in tissue paper and anything spillable came with a seal or wrapped in plastic wrap. That all stopped happening in about March. They included foam padding in the bottom of the box, but all of my products got jumbled and battered in shipping every month. No, it’s not Birchbox’s responsibility for what happens to your box in transit. But, like, if you packaged and sealed everything correctly to begin with, you wouldn’t have things breaking/leaking/ripping in transit.

THE BROKEN SAMPLE ISSUE

If you saw my August BB unboxing (if you didn’t, you can go see it here), you saw that this particular ManaKadar product arrived to me shattered to pieces. There was no bubble wrap around the powdered product, there was no individual box to protect the item. The only thing they had going for them was the fact that there was plastic wrap on it so that it didn’t explode all over the entire box. Judging by all of the comments on Facebook and YouTube, mine wasn’t the only one that arrived broken. Apparently nearly everyone who was sent this product had received it shattered to dust. I know that Birchbox had no way of knowing how delicate the product was before sending it, so that’s not really what bothered me about the situation…

INVOICE ISSUE

…I did email customer service about the broken product, and Birchbox’s customer service is one of the best out there. The representative is always very appologetic, always gets the replacement item sent to you quickly, and always gets to your email in 1-3 days. I was sent a replacement quickly, but when it got to me, the invoice had someone else’s name and address on it. I get it, they had a lot of customers receive the broken item and they had a lot of replacements to ship out to a lot of people in a very short amount of time. But the fact that customer confidentiality wasn’t considered is terrible. Even worse is the fact that if I have someone else’s information on my invoice, someone out there has my name and address on their invoice. Someone has my information, and I have no way of figuring out who it is. Hopefully they’re trustworthy people and shredded it, but I’m never going to know for sure.

SPILLED AND STAINED FIASCO

In my very last Birchbox Unboxing (link here if you missed it), I showed that the purple shampoo Birchbox had sent me leaked all over my box, drenching everything and staining the box itself. Inconvenient? Yes. Huge deal? Not really. I emailed customer service and they sent me a new box with the same items. Problem solved. Except I had said to the customer service representative that I had no need or use for the blonde toning shampoo and conditioner samples they sent to me because I don’t have color treated blonde hair that would need toning, (naturally dirty blonde hair here) nor do I plan to stain my bathtub with purple products.

She basically told me to shove it. No, actually, her exact words were, “this shampoo is actually wonderful for all blonde types…this particular shampoo is an amazing product! It really gives your hair a whole new life.” and she sent me the exact same products that I had just told her I didn’t want or need. Did I get the $5 credit that I had emailed them looking for? Yes. Did she send me a scripted line and the exact same products I told her I didn’t want? Also yes. Either way, I guess whoever I decide to pass on the shampoo and two bottles of  conditioner to will be happy to get them.

OVERALL JUST LIKING IPSY MORE

At the end of the day, I honestly just preferred Ipsy. I was being sent larger samples, I was being sent more makeup samples, and I was being sent samples that I was actually using and loving. If you go back and read my Birchbox vs. Ipsy posts, Ipsy was beating out Birchbox every single month. And while I only had that series going on my blog for a few months, I’d had Birchbox and Ipsy together for 8 total months, and probably 5 out of the 8 I preferred Ipsy to Birchbox. So in the end, I felt that the $10 I was spending on Birchbox could go to another subscription that I would like more.

At the end of the day, it was only $10. Not a big deal and definitely nothing to get upset over. If I’m unsatisfied with a service, I can plain and simple just take my money elsewhere. No harm done. ☺️

Again, this is my personal experience with Birchbox and all of the reasons I decided to cancel my subscription with them. I’m very happy with the subscription service I chose to replace them with, and at the end of the day, it’s just makeup.

I hope you enjoyed hearing why I cancelled Birchbox! Thanks for stopping by!!

BoxyCharm Unboxing – October 2016

I finally got my October BoxyCharm in the mail today! I’m so excited to show you all of the things I received in this month’s box. October’s theme was Boxy Bazaar, and I love the cute little circus theme.

Let’s get into the products!!

The first item this month (and the one I’m most excited about) is the Luxie Beauty “Eye Blending Brush Set”. These are full sized brushes and they retail for $36.00. I’m so excited to get some new eyeshadow brushes, and these pink and rose gold ones are the cutest!!

Next up is this Temptu Shimmer Bronzer. This is the full size, and it retails for $29.50. Unfortunately, this product is way too dark for my pale skin, and honestly I don’t like liquid or cream face products (besides foundation and concealer of course). I’m planning on passing this on to my cousin who’s a lot tanner than me, so it’s not going to be wasted. But I’m kinda bummed that out of the 4 different products you had a chance of getting this month, (cargo blush, cargo bronzer, highlighter, and this liquid bronzer) I ended up getting the one that I’m never going to use.

Next up we have an Ultra Matte Lip Paint from Starlooks. This is the full size and it retails for $19.00. I like that they sent a dark color for fall, but I’m personally not going to wear this (super dark lips doesn’t mesh well with my pasty white skin) so it’s going to be passed on to someone else (sorry for the lack of swatch and the annoying plastic wrap in the picture, I want to give it away new and unopened).

The next product is Briogeo’s Blow Dry Perfection Heat Protectant Crème. This is supposed to protect your hair from heat and smooth frizz. This is the full size and it retails for $24.00. I usually let my hair air dry, so I’m not sure how much use I’ll get out of this, but I’ll definitely give it a shot at least once.

The last product this month is an eyeshadow trio from IBY Beauty called “Three’s Company”. These are full sized shadows and this trio retails for $19.00. I just want to say that I love that this came wrapped in bubble wrap, and the palette itself was wrapped in foam inside of its own box. BoxyCharm gets an A+++++ for packaging things for shipping. I think these colors are gorgeous, and I’m really excited to try this out!

This month’s total value was $127.50, but I’d only give the box 2.5 or 3 out of 5 stars. The eyeshadow brushes are amazing, and I’m excited to try out the eyeshadow trio, but they did send a full sized palette with almost these exact three shades last month, which is kind of a bummer. Also, the liquid bronzer and the lipstick are both too dark for my skin tone, and I’m kinda just meh on the blow dryer cream. Not the most successful BoxyCharm for me, but still better than even the best Birchbox I ever received, so I’m not complaining.

I hope you enjoyed seeing what I got in my October BoxyCharm! Thanks for stopping by! 💋
